It's A Small World After All...
I love that the web makes the world fit into our living rooms, and even into our hands with phones, ipads, etc. For many years I taught a high school television broadcasting class. It focused on teaching basic film making and video production techniques, green screen elements, equipment maintenance and safety, media storage and archiving, among much, much more. Film competitions were always important. They allowed you and your students to compare themselves to others and see where each student was personally in their film/tv techniques as well as their group. The annual J-DAY (Journalism Day) at Troy University and The University of Alabama offer great competitions and learning opportunities for high school students to compete against and learn from other students, professors, and professionals. Editing shortcuts, filming techniques, story ideas, and relationship building are huge benefits from participating in these venues. Awards are great, but teach-ability, content preparation, professionalism, personal development, and being able to effectively work with others are most important. YouTube channels were created to archive our short films, school year highlights, sports highlights, and community projects. (Lee Generals, WetumpkaTV) Ironically, it really made the students realize first hand how small the world really was. Each day our staff created their daily broadcast and within seconds it was global. Once more, having other schools in the area (city and state) subscribe or watch was intriguing to them. Yet, when they found out that schools in England, Saudi Arabia, and Australia were also watching them, and offering feed back, it kind of freaked them out a bit. Below are some screen shots of our yearly Halloween video short films. |

Substitute Mountain (2011)This LeeTV short film was supposed to be their Halloween "short" but unfortunately, we ran out of daylight. The ending is rather dark and weak, meaning, we scrapped it. It was never shown. Escape From Ann Street evolved and replaced it.
